S.P.E.A.R. Process

Bull Creek Outdoors has used our years of experience hunting feral hogs and designing and developing the Game Changer trap systems to develop the S.P.E.A.R. Process. This is simply a more organized method to follow that will increase success in hunting wild hogs.

SURVEILLANCE

  • Find fresh hog sign
  • Rooting in fields
  • Look for tracks on trials
  • Rubs on trees and poles
  • Location may vary according to the time of year

  • In hot, dry summer, pigs may be close to a water source

  • Do not pressure hogs

  • Very smart and will move, which in turn makes it hard to trap

PRE-BAIT

  • Once hogs are located establish bait site and camera
  • No competing bait sites within a mile radius
  • Put out 150-200 lb. of corn in a row
  • Put out steamers of corn going to trails and crossings
  • Keep in mind you will put trap up around bait
  • Make sure you can pull trap to the location of corn and have room to set-up before pre-baiting
  • Once pigs are on bait, keep bait out until the trap is deployed.
  • We want hogs to become dependent on the feed source.
  • If it runs out, they may go move elsewhere
  • Want hogs to routinely come in for 2-3 days
  • Make notes on what hogs are coming
  • How many and what times
  • Different sounders; look for the coloring of hogs or other distinct features that would help identify each group
  • Dominant Boars

ERADICATE
  • Deploy Trap
  • Go in as quietly as possible with little disturbance as possible
  • If possible, put gates facing trail
  • Put bait in center of trap in a row (Allow hogs to spread out in trap)
  • Put small streamers going thru gate to trail or crossing
  • Put plenty of bait to keep hogs in trap
  • Observance
  • If all the hogs come in the first night, go ahead and drop
  • Be patient, may take time
  • Want hogs all feeding, calm, and not by the gate
  • Importance of Live View Cameras:
  • Real-time
  • Learn hog behavior
  • Wait till conditions are ideal
  • No delay in drop
  • Dispatch
  • Usually go in next Morning
  • Have only one shooter with everyone else directly behind in case of ricochet
  • Make sure gun is sighted in for close distances
  • Shoot in top of head or behind ear

ANALYZE
  • After drop has been made, a decision for your next move must be made.
  • If there are more pig in a different sounder you may leave the trap
  • If you have more pigs on bait elsewhere you may want to move the trap and get pigs back on bait in previous location
  • The functionality of the Game Changer Traps allows for quick and easy set-up and take down

REPORT
  • Keep good records
  • Know how many pigs and their sizes of the hogs that were coming in on pre-bait phase
  • Are you 100% successful, if not why?
  • Learn from mistakes and correct next time
